Description

Algeria's public university system uses a centralized post-baccalaureate orientation process that matches each candidate's exam score and stated preferences to available places. For the July 2026 admission cycle, Minister of Higher Education Kamel Baddari announced that the ministry integrated an AI-based matching algorithm into this process for the first time, weighing student preferences, academic performance and each institution's intake capacity, and publishing results through the orientation-esi.dz platform.
Of 403,119 registered baccalaureate holders, 391,018 (97%) received a place among their expressed choices: 84.71% were placed in one of their top three preferences, 94.46% in one of their top five, and 96.97% in one of their top six. 227,590 students were directed to science and technology tracks versus 163,428 to humanities and social sciences, and 2,040 were placed into newly created programmes in AI, cybersecurity and quantum computing. The 3% who did not receive a placement were offered a re-registration window from July 31 to August 2, 2026. A separate report on the same rollout described the system's aim as reducing costly mid-cycle programme transfers and better aligning graduate output with labour-market needs.
The evidence here is administrative outcome data self-reported by the ministry rather than an independently audited evaluation: no third party has published the matching algorithm's logic, tested it for bias across regions or gender, or compared outcomes to the prior manual/rules-based process on a like-for-like basis. It is a single admission cycle, so year-on-year consistency is not yet demonstrated.
