Description

UNICEF Bosnia and Herzegovina began offering the Akelius Digital Language Course in July 2020 in five temporary reception centres, using blended learning: interactive lessons on computers and tablets alongside classroom teaching, with classes also offered to parents (UNICEF BiH representative, Friends of Europe, 5 July 2021).
Context: over 67,000 refugees and migrants had passed through BiH since the start of 2018, and only about 50% of refugee and migrant children had access to formal education at that time.
UNICEF Innocenti published two reports on the intervention: a 2023 report on non-formal education in reception centres, concluding that the blended approach helped teachers personalise learning for children at different levels, and a May 2024 report on elementary schools in Una-Sana Canton, written to inform a scale-up led by the cantonal education ministry.
A later UNICEF BiH project page sets targets of about 1,000 children a year and 350 teachers and assistants trained by December 2025. These are targets, not results.
Caveats: the public report pages give no quantified learning outcomes, and one of the two sources is authored by UNICEF itself, so independent verification is limited.
