Description

The small Indian mongoose (Urva auropunctata) was deliberately introduced to Amami Oshima, Kagoshima Prefecture, in 1979 as a biological control for the venomous habu pit viper. Because mongooses are diurnal and habu are nocturnal, the two species rarely interacted; instead, the mongoose population -- which peaked at roughly 10,000 individuals by 2000 -- preyed heavily on endemic wildlife including the endangered Amami rabbit (Pentalagus furnessi) and several endemic frog species, on an island that is now part of the Amami-Oshima, Tokunoshima, Okinawa Island and Iriomote Island UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site (inscribed 2021).

A model eradication project ran from 1996-2000, followed by a full-scale programme from 2000, intensified after Japan's 2005 Invasive Alien Species Act with a dedicated field team known as the "Amami Mongoose Busters." The programme deployed more than 30,000 live traps and over 300 camera traps across the island over roughly 25 years.

The last mongoose was captured in April 2018. After years of confirmed absence and statistical eradication-probability modelling (98.9-99.7% confidence), Japan's Ministry of the Environment formally declared the mongoose eradicated on 3 September 2024 -- the world's first confirmed eradication of an invasive mammalian predator from a large, populated, inhabited island. Government monitoring reports recovery trends for the Amami rabbit, Amami tip-nosed frog, Otton frog, Amami Ishikawa's frog, Amami spiny rat and Ryukyu long-furred rat, alongside expanding ranges for the Amami thrush and Amami woodpecker. A peer-reviewed cost-benefit analysis (Oryx, Cambridge University Press) put the total programme cost at approximately $23.82M (¥3.57 billion) over 25 years, against an estimated social benefit -- from a contingent-valuation willingness-to-pay study -- of more than $1.69 billion (¥253.9 billion).

An administrative review in 2012 nearly forced a drastic budget cut over unclear interim progress, illustrating the political fragility of long-horizon eradication programmes, and species-level recovery figures (beyond directional "recovery trends") are not yet fully quantified in the government's public reporting.
