Apps for Good is an award-winning open-source education technology movement that began in 2010 in just one school and one community centre in London, at a time when mobile apps were an emerging technology. It is funded by project partners and private donations.
To build a global generation of problem solvers and makers by giving young people the skills and confidence to use new technologies to create problem-solving products they care about, turning young tech consumers into tech creators.
Courses of 10-35 hours cover apps, the Internet of Things and machine learning, continually adapted to the changing education landscape for teachers and young people in the UK. In response to Covid-19 and increased home-schooling, 'unplugged' versions of some courses were released so all work can take place at home on paper. Project partners include Vodafone, Spotify, BNY Mellon, LEGO, Eight Roads and EPAM.
Apps for Good has reached 200,000 students in over 4,270 schools worldwide. Students completing courses report greater interest in working in the technology sector or starting their own business, and can see the variety of jobs available through the programme's content and industry links.
