Description

ARASAAC (Aragonese Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication) is a project financed and coordinated by the Government of Aragon's Department of Education, Culture and Sport since 2007. It distributes pictograms and tools (AraWord, Picto Selector, communicators, personalised agendas) under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA licence, so schools, families and services can build communication boards, easy-to-understand signage and adapted materials at no cost. Its Open Classroom adds tutorials, programmes and documents.
Independent evidence is a 2018 study in Frontiers in Psychology by Paolieri and Marful (Universities of Granada and Jaén), which says the Spanish library has been translated into 17 languages and that ARASAAC is a reference in countries including Spain, France, Brazil, Italy, Finland, Germany and Belgium. The authors collected norms for 295 ARASAAC pictograms from 219 Spanish university students; split-half reliability ranged from 0.84 to 0.93 (mean 0.89), and validity indices were adequate (mean Hellinger affinity 0.78).
Caution: only about 36% of the most common names given by participants matched ARASAAC's own labels, so labelling may need review; norms come from Spanish-speaking university students rather than AAC users, so they validate the images' recognisability but not outcomes for users. The project publishes no download or user statistics, and international-use claims rest on the authors' report. Value lies in a sustained, public, openly licensed symbol set that others can adapt.
