Israel's largest landfill — 25 million tonnes dumped 1952–1998 — was capped and redesigned by architect Peter Latz into an 800-hectare park. Methane from dozens of gas wells is converted to electricity; a bioplastic cap lets flora and fauna re-establish above the waste.
From 1952 to 1998 the Hiriya site accumulated an estimated 25 million tonnes of waste as Israel's largest municipal landfill.
An international design competition (14 entries, won 2004 by Peter Latz) led to remediation construction from 2011-2023: dozens of methane gas-extraction wells feeding an electricity plant, a bioplastic barrier layer, and an on-site recycling and transfer station processing several thousand tonnes of waste a day.
The roughly 800-hectare Ariel Sharon Park opened to the public from 2014, with vegetation and wildlife visibly re-established across the capped landform.
No independent funding or total-cost breakdown, species inventory, or fire-resilience data were found in public sources, so ecological recovery here is documented qualitatively rather than through counted metrics.
