Sweden made Artificial Intelligence a nationally examined subject in upper-secondary and adult education from 2024, with a formal teacher-authorization pathway requiring university AI credits — rolled out a year early after schools' demand outpaced qualified teachers.
Skolverket, Sweden's national education agency, introduced "Artificiell Intelligens" as a new subject in gymnasium (upper-secondary school) and komvux (municipal adult education), with two 100-point course levels. To legally teach it, a teacher must hold formal state authorization: those already authorized in technology, mathematics, programming or interface/web design need 15 university credits (högskolepoäng) in AI; teachers authorized in other subjects need 60–90 credits, or can take Skolverket's own 7.5-credit continuing-education course, "Undervisa i artificiell intelligens på gymnasiet."
Skolverket moved the launch forward by a year, to autumn 2024, because school demand for the subject was outpacing the supply of authorized teachers. At launch, national broadcaster TV4 reported that only eight teachers in the entire country held the required authorization — a concrete illustration of the capability bottleneck behind an otherwise ambitious national policy.
