Description

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and the Australian non-profit Code for Schools launched a national artificial-intelligence literacy programme for Australian schools, positioned as the country's first locally developed AI curriculum of its kind. The programme delivers age-appropriate, curriculum-aligned learning modules covering four areas: ethical foundations, practical AI skills, industry case studies and critical-thinking scenarios, alongside companion resources for teachers, parents and carers.
Development ran through 2025 with co-design input from educators, students and industry specialists, including a pilot phase in selected schools, before a nationwide rollout beginning Term 1, 2026 via a national learning-management system reaching public, independent and Catholic schools. The partners have stated an ambition to reach one million students within three years of launch.
Independent Australian education and technology press (itbrief.com.au, Careers with STEM, Education Matters magazine) covered the launch alongside AWS's own announcement, noting the programme sits against a backdrop of concern that Australian schools risk falling behind on AI skills relative to international peers. As a first-year national rollout, the programme does not yet have independently measured learning-outcome data; its evidence at this stage rests on the scale of the coordinated rollout and co-design process rather than demonstrated impact.
