Description

Bandung—West Java's capital with 2.5 million residents—has systematically built a creative and digital innovation ecosystem. On 12 December 2017, Mayor Ridwan Kamil inaugurated the Bandung Creative Hub (BCH), a purpose-built six-storey city-government facility designed to co-locate creative industries: innovation studios, 3D printers, laser-cutting equipment, fashion and textile studios, music studios, photo and TV production suites, and shared co-working space. BCH is the flagship of a planned network of creative hubs across Bandung's districts.

In 2017, Bandung joined UNESCO's Creative Cities Network under the Design category, recognised specifically for its 'Design Thinking for Government' initiative—applying human-centred design methodologies to urban problem-solving and public service delivery. 56% of Bandung's economic activity is classified as design-related, spanning fashion, graphic design, and digital media.

The broader creative and digital economy context is substantial. West Java's creative economy contributed IDR 176.4 trillion (~US$11.2 billion) to provincial GDP in 2023, representing 8.9% of total economic output, with Bandung as the primary driver. Bandung accounts for 12–14% of national startup formations and is the third-largest startup city in Indonesia after Jakarta and Surabaya. In 2023, Bandung's universities—Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) and Telkom University—produced over 8,000 digital and creative-economy graduates, including more than 2,000 from computer science and digital media programmes.

Urban experimentation through civic co-design is embedded in BCH's mission: the DesignAction.bdg workshop uses participatory design to co-create inclusive public-space solutions with residents. IndigoHub Bandung (formerly Bandung Digital Valley, established 2013 by Telkom Indonesia) co-locates in the city's ecosystem and feeds into the national Indigo incubator network. The combination of public infrastructure (BCH), state-enterprise incubation (Indigo), and a strong university talent pipeline makes Bandung one of Southeast Asia's more distinctive city-led creative innovation models.
