NL41Museum door de Stad ('Museum through the City') is a travelling pop-up exhibition programme run by Eindhoven Museum (with Cultuur Eindhoven) from 2018-2020, using installations inspired by the city and the museum's cultural/historical collection.
Goals were to raise public awareness of the city's cultural identity, use the museum's collection in new creative ways, experiment with a museum presence throughout the city, and challenge designers to create sustainable, interactive experiences.
Designers were invited to create installations tied to five yearly themes (Food, Mobility, 75 years liberated, 100 years greater Eindhoven, Building the future) linked to existing city events, using objects from the museum's collection and encouraging audience participation.
Museum door de Stad increased Eindhoven Museum visitor numbers by about a third, reaching 16,750 participants in 2019, and helped the museum expand its partner network beyond the cultural sector.
The project has fed into the museum's ambition to develop a new historical museum park (VONK!) and is associated with increased local-government strategic use of design.
