Context

Benjakitti Forest Park occupies 41 hectares (102 acres) of former Tobacco Authority of Thailand land in central Bangkok. Designed by Turenscape with Arsomsilp Community and Environmental Architect on a "sponge city" concept, it was built in 18 months on a documented low-cost budget and opened to the public in 2022.

Activities

The park's linear wetlands were engineered to retain stormwater during the monsoon season while also treating polluted water from an adjacent canal, with a native-plant palette supporting habitat recovery on the former industrial site.

Results

Two independent sources — the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), which gave the project a 2024 professional award, and Singapore's government-linked Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC) — both verify that the park's linear wetlands retain up to 200,000 cubic metres of stormwater during the monsoon season, and CLC additionally reports the wetland cleans up to 8,152 cubic metres of polluted canal water daily. Both sources cite the park's flood performance as a real-world test: during a monsoon season in which much of surrounding Bangkok flooded, the park and its immediate vicinity did not. ASLA's award documentation records 91 bird species observed post-completion; CLC separately reports "close to 100" species — independently consistent evidence of biodiversity recovery on a former industrial site.

Conclusions

Neither source publishes a carbon-sequestration figure or a rigorous pre-construction biodiversity baseline, so the ecological gain, while corroborated by two credible institutions, cannot be quantified as a precise before/after change.
