Canada's Government AI Register — A First Public Ledger of Federal AI Systems

The Government of Canada AI Register is an Open Government Portal dataset, launched as a Minimum Viable Product on 28 November 2025 by the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat's Office of the Chief Information Officer. It consolidates several pre-existing federal transparency instruments — Algorithmic Impact Assessments, Access to Information request records, Parliamentary Question responses, Personal Information Banks and the GC Service Inventory — into a single public register of AI systems in use, in development or under exploration.
At launch it drew input from 42 federal institutions and listed over 400 systems, ranging from uses first documented in 1994 to systems piloted in 2025; it excludes low-risk embedded commercial AI such as spell-checkers. Treasury Board President Shafqat Ali described it as a step toward public trust and reduced duplication of effort across departments, fulfilling a commitment in the AI Strategy for the Federal Public Service 2025-2027.
The department is explicit that this is an early-stage release: it acknowledges that 'not all entries are complete, and formatting may vary' because data was pulled from instruments collected at different times under different rules, and it has scheduled public consultations through 2026 to refine the register before moving to regular departmental updates — so its long-term completeness and update cadence are not yet proven.
