Description

In January 2026 Slovakia's Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth (minister Tomáš Drucker) announced the purchase of about 20,000 ChatGPT Edu licences for roughly €1.57 million (about €4.76 per licence per month after a negotiated discount). The licences are free for university lecturers and students preparing to become teachers at the pedagogical faculties, so that future teachers gain practical experience with AI in their work. The ministry described the arrangement as a long-term strategic cooperation with OpenAI rather than a one-off project; licences are secured for one year, with plans to extend access to other universities.
In May 2026 access was widened to about 80,000 primary and secondary school teachers. Use is voluntary, the state pays only for licences teachers actually use, and the minister stated that the model will not be trained on data from Slovak schools.
The ministry intends to work with OpenAI on feedback and on research into the impact of AI tools on educational outcomes, to be carried out through the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava and the Technical University in Košice. No outcome data, teacher-training curriculum or published data-protection impact assessment has been reported so far, so the evidence for learning impact is still absent; this entry documents a large, publicly funded national access model at an early stage.
