Context

Code to Inspire (CTI), founded by Fereshteh Forough, opened in Herat, Afghanistan in November 2015 as a free after-school coding, web/app and design school for young Afghan women aged roughly 14-25.

Results

CTI has taught roughly 200 young women to code, with 60-70% of graduates (figures vary by source/year) going on to freelance or find employment in web/mobile development. After the 2021 Taliban takeover and ban on female education, the physical campus closed but Forough kept the programme running online, with roughly 80% of students reportedly continuing studies remotely.
