Description

The Centre for Robotics and Artificial Intelligence in Education (CRAIE) at the University of Belgrade's Faculty of Education runs a hybrid in-service training programme for Serbian primary and secondary teachers on applying AI in teaching. Authors describe it as a system-level, Ministry-supported programme; CRAIE was established in 2020 with Chinese partners (NetDragon Websoft, Beijing Normal University) and has since become the first UNESCO IIOE national centre.
A 2025 study in Research in Pedagogy (156 teachers, 142 women and 14 men) examined training on ChatGPT-based interactive avatars. Teachers self-assessed their competence before and after. A Wilcoxon signed-rank test showed a significant gain (Z = -9.59, p < .001, r = 0.895): 115 teachers rated themselves higher, 41 reported no change and none rated themselves lower. The gain did not differ by gender, years of experience or qualification level.
A second INTED2026 paper covers a one-day face-to-face ChatGPT workshop within the blended format, run since summer 2025, with 244 teachers. Most had previously used ChatGPT only occasionally and unsystematically, most said expectations were met, and some felt ready to mentor colleagues. Participants asked for multi-day sessions and more places.
Cautions: all outcomes are self-reported, there is no control group and no follow-up on classroom practice or pupil learning, the sample is overwhelmingly female and the authors call the results preliminary. Xinhua reports that the centre has trained thousands of teachers, but gives no verified count, and the Ministry's role is described by the paper authors rather than documented by an independent source.
