The main purpose of the project was to develop an innovative learning approach - digital storytelling, adapted to people with intellectual disabilities. In the project, they developed innovative learning tools for teachers to them develop skills and empower people with intellectual disabilities.
Project goals:
• To train those working with people with intellectual disabilities to use the method of digital storytelling.
• Increase educational opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities for full participation in society and a successful transition to the labour market.
• Improve the basic skills (literacy and digital skills) of people with intellectual disabilities, encourage their participation in society and increase their social inclusion.
• Include and use an innovative digital storytelling methodology tailored to people with intellectual disabilities, which includes the practical implementation of the real-life process.
Digital Storytelling is a modern form of storytelling or a method that can be used as an educational tool, especially when working with vulnerable target groups. The term “digital storytelling” means a simple and creative process through which people who have little or no computer experience acquire basic skills and can tell a personal story through a short film.
Expected results:
• An innovative digital storytelling methodology tailored to the needs of learners.
• Professionally trained teachers of students with intellectual disabilities, through a five-day workshop, where they will be trained on how to use this "user" friendly and fun methodology to improve the skills of people with intellectual disabilities.
• Develop a handbook for teachers working with people with intellectual disabilities
• Develop information for participants that will provide simple and understandable guidelines for the use of free computer programs for visual editing.
• Develop the basic skills (especially digital skills and literacy) of participants.
Context: People with intellectual disabilities represent one of the most marginalized and discriminated groups. Of particular concern is discrimination in education - people with intellectual disabilities have fewer educational opportunities than any other group. Globally, most people with intellectual disabilities do not attend school at all or it is usually in a separate facility or classroom with substandard resources. Teachers also generally feel unprepared to teach people with intellectual disabilities and the lack of support schools need to be effective.
