dislessIA — San Marino's University Trains Teachers to Use Generative AI for Dyslexia Support

On 24 February 2024, the Università degli Studi della Repubblica di San Marino (UNIRSM) ran dislessIA — L'Intelligenza Artificiale incontra i Disturbi Specifici dell'Apprendimento, a full-day online seminar exploring how generative AI tools can support students with dyslexia and other Specific Learning Disorders (DSA). The event was organised with edtech company Anastasis and patronised by San Marino's State Secretariat for Education and Culture and by the Sammarinese and Italian Dyslexia Associations (AID); it was accredited for continuing professional development by Italy's Ministry of Education, extending its reach to teachers across the San Marino–Italy cross-border school system.

The seminar targeted teachers, clinicians and university students, framing generative AI as a compensatory tool — alongside existing assistive technology — for reading, writing and study support. Speakers included Rita Cucchiara, director of the AImageLab AI Research Center at the University of Modena e Reggio Emilia, and Giacomo Stella, scientific director of UNIRSM's Center for Dyslexia Studies and founder of AID, who discussed both the opportunities and the risks of applying generative AI to learning disorders. The seminar sits inside UNIRSM's ongoing postgraduate programme on DSA neuropsychology and re-education, rather than existing as an isolated one-off.
