Context

OLE Nepal, headquartered in Lalitpur, built OLEN i-OCR between March and August 2024 to convert scanned Nepali- and English-language documents into EPUB files formatted for screen readers such as NVDA and Thorium — adding alt text, consistent heading structure and reflowed layout for tables, lists and poetry. The tool responds to a long-documented shortage of free OCR software for the Nepali script, and was developed under OLE Nepal's 'Enhanced Accessibility in Learning' project, funded by Japan's KDDI Foundation.

Activities

In the first quarter of 2024, OLE Nepal's team visited four schools for visually-impaired students (Shree Panchodaya, Purwanchal Gyan Chakshu, Shanti Namuna and Damkada Secondary Schools) to deploy screen-reader access to its E-Pustakalaya digital library, and two schools for deaf students (Shree Navajyoti Deaf School and Shrijana Resident Deaf School, Kaski) to integrate sign-language-supported content.

Results

With KDDI Foundation support, 163 interactive learning items were updated for accessibility in 2024. Neither OLE Nepal nor KDDI Foundation discloses the tool's underlying model architecture or publishes usage/accuracy statistics, so its technical AI claims cannot be independently verified beyond being described as 'intelligent' OCR.
