A 2012 Italian law mandated female board quotas for listed companies. This study examines whether the law had spillover effects on the boards of unlisted banks, which were not required to comply, using a panel of unlisted Italian banks over 2006-2018.
Both the probability of having at least one woman on the board and the proportion of women on unlisted-bank boards rose significantly after the law passed, with results robust to different model specifications and estimation techniques.
The authors interpret this as evidence that the quota law generated broader social-norm change and isomorphic pressure, inducing unlisted banks to mimic the board composition of their listed counterparts even without being legally required to.
