Context

Dundee has a large number of young people with limited access to the facilities and resources to learn about the digital world and develop digital skills. The project was aimed at 12-16 year olds located in areas ill-equipped with the facilities and resources required to engage in the digital sphere.

Objectives

The initiative targeted 600 pupils in Dundee, aimed at fostering engagement with digital skills.

Activities

The project operated in three stages: (1) Portable Lab Sessions introducing participants to computer science fields such as networking, programming and web design through fun and interactive practical events; (2) free evening Code Academy classes and taster workshops giving young people hands-on practical experience of web development, robotics and software development; and (3) a celebration event — a digital-themed day at the Dundee Science Centre for participants and their families to mark their achievements.

Results

600 pupils were reached through the programme.
