Results
EKWMA and a peer-reviewed study estimate the system processes 550–1,000 million litres of wastewater daily, producing roughly 10,000–11,000 tonnes of fish and 150 tonnes of vegetables daily — supplying close to a third of Kolkata's fish consumption — but the same peer-reviewed study found locally elevated arsenic, mercury and cadmium in fish and sediment, and reporting documents ongoing loss of fishpond area to encroachment despite statutory protection.
