Context

EPAL/AdVT is a State Business Sector company within the Águas de Portugal Group, supervised by the Ministry responsible for the Environment. As a labour-intensive, highly operational company it employs far more men than women (73% vs 27%, Dec 2022), which EPAL cites as the driving factor behind its gender-equality initiatives.

Activities

EPAL collaborates with national equality bodies (CIG, CITE) on partnership activities, has signed the National Gender Equality Target, and has been a member of the iGen — Organisations for Equality Forum task force since 2021. Its leadership strategy includes internal awareness campaigns, participation/training/coaching for staff pursuing leadership roles, elimination of gender bias in leadership selection, and membership of networks such as the Professional Women Network and Business as Nature.

Results

The Board of Directors comprises two women and three men, complying with applicable legislation, and other hierarchies (supervisory bodies, corporate bodies, top-level managers) are reported as balanced between men and women. An independent external analysis of remuneration distribution across the company found no identified pay gaps.
