Context

Equal Pay Day is a nationwide German public-awareness campaign (first held in 2008) targeting the public, policymakers, trade unions and employers to highlight the gender pay gap and mobilise action to close it. The action day marks the point to which women must work into the year to match men's prior-year pay.

Results

The action day has grown into a year-round campaign with thousands of participants and creative nationwide awareness activities. The Federal Statistical Office reported a gender pay gap of 20% in 2019, equivalent to 77 days (placing Equal Pay Day on 14 March in 2021).
