Chang Gung University ran Taiwan's first feasibility and efficacy studies of eye-gaze assistive technology for children with severe motor and communication difficulties, finding real gains in computer participation but flagging Taiwan's early implementation stage.
Researchers at Chang Gung University/Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, with Jonkoping University and Stockholm University, studied eye-gaze assistive technology enabling computer control via eye movement for children with severe motor and communication difficulties in Taiwan, where rollout of the technology was still at an early stage.
A 2022 study (Disability and Rehabilitation) used a multiple-baseline design across 4 participants aged 3-6 and found increased participation in computer activities. A 2023 feasibility study (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) surveyed 16 teachers/parents/therapists supporting 5 students after a six-month intervention: participants perceived genuine gains in interaction and communication, but identified barriers including the need for portable systems and a lack of in-service training and equipment-loan support.
Both studies are small-sample and Taiwan-specific rather than large controlled trials, but represent one of the few peer-reviewed, non-Western evidence bases for eye-gaze AAC technology in schools.
Implementation detail (cost, timeline, staffing, conditions for success) is not yet available for this practice.
