Context

This study investigates Romania's position in the Gender Equality Index and progress in women's representation in elected and appointed political positions over 2003–2020/2021, aiming to build a comprehensive picture of political leadership in Romania and the country's ranking and progress on gender equality in high-decision-power positions.

Results

The study finds that women continue to be underrepresented in political-power roles in Romania — as ministers, deputies, senators, members of County Councils, and mayors. Gender balance in these positions is far from achieved, and the authors note that the COVID-19 pandemic risked widening an already-large gender gap in this field; men continue to be elected and appointed to these positions of real decision-making power.

Conclusions

The gender-equality objective for political leadership in Romania was not fulfilled over the period studied.
