Context

Commissioned by the National Women's Council of Ireland (NWCI) as part of its women-in-leadership work, this research deepens understanding of the barriers women face in running for and being elected to local office in Ireland, providing an action plan to address women's underrepresentation in local politics.

Objectives

To identify the barriers Traveller and Roma women, migrant women, working-class women and women with disabilities face in reaching local decision-making roles (ministerial positions, board chairs, county/city council leadership), and to improve gender balance in local government so that it truly reflects local communities and their needs.
