Context

This Banca d'Italia working paper studies the effect of Italy's 2011 law requiring listed companies, including banks, to raise female board representation to at least one third of seats. Using administrative data on board composition from 2007 to 2019, it compares listed banks (directly targeted by the law) and unlisted banks belonging to listed groups against banks in non-listed groups, before and after the law's introduction, to test for spillover effects.

Results

Female representation increased only among listed banks, with no spillover effect on unlisted banks belonging to listed groups. The economic performance of listed banks remained broadly unchanged after the reform.
