Context

Quantitative content-analysis study monitoring gendered representation of women politicians in Belgian election news coverage, conducted by researchers at Ghent University ahead of the 2019 Belgian elections.

Results

The study analysed a sample of 981 television, newspaper, radio and web-based news items in the run-up to the 2019 elections. It found that women candidates were represented less often than men and that their gender, appearance and family life were highlighted more frequently; differences in coverage were not fully explained by sex or political characteristics; differences between media types were limited, though web-based news coverage was more negative in tone.
