EE001ICT is the fastest-growing industry in Estonia; a 2017 shortfall of 7,000 ICT specialists was expected to reach 8,600 by 2020, while only 29% of ICT workers and 29% of ICT students in Estonia are women, a divide a 2015 Tartu University/Skype Microsoft Estonia study linked to STEM stereotypes reinforced by parents and teachers.
Launched by the Estonian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications and implemented by Idea Group, the campaign aimed to challenge gender stereotypes and give teenage girls aged 15-19 real hands-on ICT work experience and career awareness.
Over the two-year campaign (2018-2019), 50 guest lectures introducing ICT careers took place in high schools around Estonia, and 10 one-day entry-level workshops (programming, development, design, robotics) were run for teenage girls at technology companies with all-female NGO Tech Sisters and female mentors; the StartIT website offered a mini-simulator matching skills to specialisations.
The €200,000 campaign delivered 50 guest lectures and 10 one-day workshops in cooperation with public, private and third-sector partners.
