Description

Chile's National Center for Artificial Intelligence (CENIA), the Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation, the Kodea Foundation and the Universidad Metropolitana de Ciencias de la Educación (UMCE) launched 'Impulsemos la Educación del Futuro Juntos', a certification programme that trains pedagogy (pre-service teacher) students to integrate AI into their future classrooms.
In its first phase, 200 pedagogy students from four universities — UMCE, Universidad del Bío-Bío, Universidad de La Serena and Universidad de Playa Ancha — completed a 40-hour virtual course and received a certification. Programme organisers project that these 200 future teachers will collectively reach more than 6,000 schoolchildren once they begin teaching. A second, BHP Foundation-supported phase aims to train 75 university lecturers, who would in turn train more than 3,300 additional pedagogy students across 26 more universities, for a projected indirect reach of over 100,000 schoolchildren.
The 200-student, 40-hour, certified pilot is a real and verifiable input measure; the 6,000- and 100,000-child reach figures are the programme's own multiplier projections rather than measured learning outcomes, and no independent assessment of how the certified teachers actually use AI in their classrooms, or of any resulting change in pupil learning, has yet been published. The programme is nonetheless a rare example of a national AI institute partnering directly with teacher-training universities rather than only in-service teachers.
