Since 1994, Keewaytinook Okimakanak's K-Net has built First Nations-owned broadband and telehealth infrastructure in remote northwestern Ontario, growing from 6 founding communities to 100+, and helped shape Canada's community-led 'First Mile' telecom policy.
K-Net Services, mandated in 1994 by the Keewaytinook Okimakanak Tribal Council of six First Nations in Ontario's remote Sioux Lookout region, builds community-owned broadband, cellular and videoconferencing infrastructure on a 'first mile' model that puts communities in control of network planning, ownership and applications where commercial providers had not invested.
KO Telemedicine expanded videoconferencing telehealth from the six founding communities in 2001 to 25 Nishnawbe Aski Nation communities by 2005; roughly 40 communities gained household-level broadband within a decade, and K-Net infrastructure now supports more than 100 First Nations communities across northern Ontario. K-Net co-founded the First Mile Connectivity Consortium (2013), which has formally shaped CRTC policy on community-owned infrastructure funding. Hundreds of First Nations communities across Canada still lack adequate broadband.
