Since 2009, Saudi Arabia's KAUST has spun out close to 120 deep-tech companies via its Innovation Fund and Capital K vehicle; by late 2025 they had raised over $1bn, generated $925m in revenue and created 6,661 jobs, per KAUST and Global Venturing.
KAUST (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology) was established in 2009 in Thuwal on Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast as a graduate research university with an explicit commercialisation mandate. Its National Transformation Institute runs KAUST Innovation Ventures, combining a seed-stage Innovation Fund (investments of $250,000 to $1 million) with Capital K, a $200 million Silicon Valley-based deep-tech scale-up fund.
Since 2009, KAUST has spun out close to 120 companies. By November 2025, KAUST announced its portfolio companies had collectively raised more than $1 billion in investment, generated $925 million in revenue, employed 6,661 people, and reached a combined valuation above $2 billion; $150 million of that investment was raised in 2024 alone. In 2022, a 'Destination Deep Tech' spin-in cohort brought five international startups (including CeEntek, Hopu and Pasqal) to develop technology within the Kingdom.
These headline figures originate from KAUST's own National Transformation Institute and are echoed rather than independently re-verified by trade press such as Global Venturing. The model is also inseparable from large-scale state funding under Saudi Vision 2030, meaning its university-to-market pipeline is difficult to replicate at institutions without comparable endowment or government backing.
