Malaysia's state-owned venture-capital arm has funded 850+ tech companies since 1992, seeding spin-offs like Globetronics (1993) and TT Vision (RM8.75m) through to Bursa Malaysia listings. Portfolio market cap reportedly grew from ~RM1bn (2022) to over RM7bn today.
The Malaysian Technology Development Corporation (MTDC) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of state investment fund Khazanah Nasional Berhad, established in 1992 to commercialise local R&D and facilitate technology adoption by Malaysian companies, sitting under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).
MTDC combines venture-capital financing with technology-transfer facilitation across an 'Investment Funnel' spanning seed-stage de-risking through Series B growth funding, and has supported university spin-offs such as Monash University Malaysia's FirstChip sensor-chip venture.
According to press coverage of MTDC's 30th anniversary (December 2022), the corporation had funded and invested in more than 850 Malaysian technology companies over three decades, with portfolio companies reaching a combined market capitalisation of over RM1 billion, including IPOs on Bursa Malaysia and foreign exchanges. MTDC's own current website raises that figure to over RM7 billion. Named examples include Globetronics Technology Berhad (an early 1993 investment, now a listed semiconductor contract manufacturer) and TT Vision Holdings Berhad, which received an initial MTDC investment of RM8.75 million before its own Bursa Malaysia listing.
The RM7 billion figure is MTDC's own current claim and could not be independently corroborated against the RM1 billion figure reported in 2022 — the jump is plausible given interim portfolio IPOs, but should be treated as a self-reported, unaudited estimate rather than a verified valuation.
