EU LIFE-funded project mapped carbon stocks across 13,000+ ha of Andalusian Posidonia oceanica meadows and salt marshes (13,085 ktCO2 stored), then created Spain's first regional Blue Carbon Standard so companies can fund verified seagrass-conservation offsets.
ES61Mediterranean Posidonia oceanica meadows are among the most carbon-dense ecosystems on Earth but are in widespread decline from coastal development, trawling and warming seas; Andalusia holds significant meadows along its Mediterranean coast, alongside extensive tidal salt marshes in the Bay of Cádiz.
Between 2015 and 2021, the Junta de Andalucía led the EU LIFE Blue Natura project (total budget €2,513,792, EU contribution €1,508,275) with CSIC-CEAB, IUCN-Med and the NGO Hombre y Territorio to survey and quantify carbon stocks in Posidonia oceanica meadows at Cabo de Gata-Níjar and in tidal marshes and seagrass across the Bay of Cádiz, the Strait of Gibraltar and the Odiel Marshes — more than 13,000 hectares in total — and to design a verification methodology for blue-carbon offset projects.
The project quantified total blue-carbon stocks at roughly 13,085 kilotonnes of CO2 across these Andalusian seagrass and marsh habitats and published the region's first Blue Carbon Standard, enabling private companies to fund verified conservation projects as voluntary carbon offsets. Two pilot blue-carbon compensation projects were established, and in 2022 the European Commission named LIFE Blue Natura one of its 'Best LIFE Environment Projects.'
The standard is new and voluntary: public reporting describes it as a foundational framework with two pilot compensation projects rather than a mature, high-volume carbon market, and independent verification of long-term uptake and credit integrity beyond the project's 2021 close has not been published.
