Description

Guyana's public hospital system has long struggled with shortages of radiologists and pathologists, especially outside Georgetown, leaving imaging and lab results to travel slowly between facilities and specialists.

Since 2024, the Guyana Ministry of Health, the Mount Sinai Health System and Hess Corporation have built a partnership to modernise diagnostics: Georgetown Public Hospital's pathology and laboratory services were reopened and expanded with a remote connection to Mount Sinai's Department of Pathology in New York, and telemedicine has been extended to roughly 130 sites nationwide, with 50 more planned for 2026. In March 2026 the partners launched a hospital-quality and patient-safety programme covering six named regional hospitals (Lima Sands, De Kinderen, Diamond, Enmore, Bath Settlement and No. 75 Village), targeting emergency triage, patient identification and medication safety. In April 2026, Mount Sinai's Windreich Department of Artificial Intelligence and Human Health and the Ministry of Health convened a national seminar on "practical, responsible integration" of AI in care, alongside a data-protection law to govern clinical AI use.

Local reporting describes AI-assisted reading of CT scans, X-rays and pathology slides now active in several facilities, with imaging turnaround described as falling "from days to minutes," and an expanding electronic health record and GPS-enabled ambulance dispatch system.

These figures come chiefly from government and partner communications rather than an independent clinical evaluation: no peer-reviewed study of diagnostic accuracy or patient-outcome impact has yet been published, and the partnership itself is still expanding site by site. The data-protection legislation and the April 2026 ethics seminar suggest governance is being built alongside deployment rather than fully preceding it.
