DE21The City of Munich's Innovation Challenge is an annual competition, held since 2018, that invites startups, students, entrepreneurs and other innovators to submit solutions to specific challenges facing the city, such as climate-friendly rainwater management, digital care networks for senior citizens, and monitoring of Munich's diesel-free zone. The programme runs in two phases: a competition phase, in which a jury of city department representatives and entrepreneurship centres selects winning proposals, followed by a co-creation phase of 3 to 6 months in which winning solutions are developed and tested within the city. Winning teams are supported by five partner entrepreneurship centres and gain access to city government departments, data and information to help realise their ideas.
In the 2023 edition, the programme addressed five city challenges and produced around 15 creative, tech-forward approaches to issues including climate change, digitisation, data collection and skills shortages. Winning teams each receive €10,000 in prize money, with a further €15,000 per challenge available for testing winning proposals. The programme has been running successfully for 5 years.
