Context

In October 2025, Iceland's Directorate of Education and School Services (MMS) launched a pilot giving teachers free access to Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini for lesson planning, developed with the Icelandic Teachers' Union (KÍ) and running six months, October 2025 to April 2026.

Activities

Participating teachers get training materials, a dedicated support network, and Claude's support for the Icelandic language. The European Trade Union Committee for Education (ETUCE) published a scope check in November 2025: about 300 primary/lower-secondary teachers (~5% of that group) and about 260 upper-secondary/vocational teachers (~14%) are enrolled — around 7% of Iceland's teachers overall.

Results

MMS is tracking the pilot through short recurring teacher surveys and aggregate usage statistics rather than a pre-registered study design, and no outcome data had been published as of the last review.

Conclusions

ETUCE noted this is a markedly more modest, opt-in scope than the vendor's press release implied, and MMS itself states plainly that 'this is only a pilot project intended to evaluate the potential impact before any decision is made.'
