Italy's National Strategy for Gender Equality 2021-2026, promoted by the Parliament Department of Gender Equality, is inspired by the EU's Gender Equality Strategy 2020-2025 (approved by the European Parliament on 21 January 2021) and was developed through a participatory process involving regional administrations, social partners and associations.
To guarantee equal participation and opportunities for men and women in the labour market and in economic, political and civil decision-making, and to end gender-based discrimination and violence; it also serves as the reference for implementing Italy's PNRR and for reforming the Family Act.
The strategy document sets out the current situation, objectives and five strategic priorities (work, income, skills, time, power), together with related interventions, indicators and targets for implementation.
The Strategy formalises by law the requirement for equal participation of men and women in politics, economy and civil society, though the text notes social change cannot be forced by law alone and needs accompanying measures.
