one-north is a 200 ha state-planned R&D and innovation district in Queenstown, Singapore. With 400+ leading companies, 800+ startups and ~50,000 knowledge workers, it concentrates biomedical, ICT, media and deep-tech activity in a purpose-built urban innovation cluster.
one-north was conceptualised in Singapore's 1991 National Technology Plan and launched by JTC Corporation in December 2001. The 200-hectare district in Queenstown was master-planned to co-locate life-sciences research (Biopolis), info-comm and media (Fusionopolis, Mediapolis), engineering enterprises and learning institutions in a walkable, high-density urban environment — a deliberate departure from car-dependent suburban science parks.
By the mid-2020s the district hosted over 400 leading companies, more than 800 startups and approximately 50,000 knowledge workers, with total investment attracted exceeding S$ 8 billion. Key anchor tenants include A*STAR research institutes, P&G's regional R&D hub, and Grab's headquarters. LaunchPad @ one-north, the startup precinct, had engaged nearly 700 local and international startups as of 2024 through the Action Community for Entrepreneurship (ACE.SG).
The district remains in active expansion: Stage One — a new campus to bring global startup-ecosystem players together — opened officially in late 2024 following its announcement at SWITCH 2024. In Singapore's Budget 2026, Kampong AI was announced as a dedicated AI experimentation zone within one-north, underscoring continued policy commitment to the precinct model. JTC Corporation subsequently applied the same integrated cluster logic at Jurong Innovation District, demonstrating intra-national replication. The model has been referenced widely in Asian and global urban-policy literature as a blueprint for converting research capacity into commercialisation at district scale.
