PT16The study was run by the Senior University Albicastrense (USALBI), founded under the sponsorship of Castelo Branco City Council and integrated into the Amato Lusitano Development Association, to promote active ageing with quality of life. USALBI has a teaching staff of 55, mostly volunteers, teaching 42 subjects.
Investigate whether the Peak and Neuronation cognitive-training apps (targeting memory, language, mental agility, reasoning, attention, problem-solving and other faculties) can support active ageing and digital inclusion among older adults.
18 Computer Science students aged 56-80 from USALBI took part. The qualitative methodology combined a case study, non-participating observation, questionnaire surveys and semi-structured interviews across 12 practical sessions where the apps were introduced. The university and the research incurred no cost, as USALBI is volunteer-led.
Participants showed immediate effects in terms of awareness and knowledge, found the apps easy to use, and increased their digital competences.
The study is notable for involving participants over 65 in a formal learning environment, and for being delivered entirely by volunteers at no cost.
