Porto Digital

Porto Digital was founded in July 2000 in Recife Antigo, the historic 17th-century port district of Recife, Brazil, funded through the privatisation of the state electricity company CELPE together with the Pernambuco state government, private investors and the Inter-American Development Bank. Its anchor institution, CESAR (Recife Center for Advanced Studies and Systems), was already active in software R&D before the park's creation.

The park was evaluated as Brazil's largest science park by AT Kearney in 2005 and won Brazil's Best Science Park award from ANPROTEC in 2007, 2011 and 2015; it hosted the IASP's 30th World Conference in 2013. By 2020 it had grown to more than 330 technology companies employing over 11,000 people; by 2024, independent Brazilian business press reported 340+ companies and institutions generating R$6.2 billion (about US$1.1 billion) in combined revenue — up 14% on 2023 — and 21,551 jobs.

Porto Digital blends ICT/software services with a creative-economy cluster (gaming, animation, design, film), and its governance model — a non-profit management body co-funded by state government and privatised-utility proceeds — has been studied and referenced by other cities planning similar districts (e.g. Armenia's Gyumri Technopark). The main caveat is that revenue and job figures are self-reported by the park's management body and aggregated from member companies rather than independently audited.
