Prayatna Nepal is a non-profit, women-led disabled persons' organisation founded in 2015 by Sarita Lamichhane, a blind woman from Gorkha, to advance the rights and independence of women and girls with visual impairment in Nepal.
Under its 'Promoting Digital Rights – Ensuring Digital Accessibility of Persons with Disabilities in Nepal' project, the organisation audited 20 public and private-sector websites and 10 mobile applications against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
On 15 December 2022, Prayatna Nepal convened a half-day validation workshop at Hotel Marshyangdi in Kathmandu, bringing together 47 representatives from government bodies, the National Human Rights Commission, UN agencies, international NGOs and organisations of persons with disabilities to review the audit findings. Recurring barriers identified included poor navigation design, illogical heading structures and missing captions on multimedia content.
The audit and workshop mark a diagnostic and advocacy step rather than a completed remediation programme: no public data yet confirms how many of the audited platforms have since been fixed, and the work was delivered under a time-bound, donor-supported project (with input from the Abilis Foundation) rather than a permanent statutory mandate.
