Program H is Promundo's gender-transformative group curriculum for young men, developed in Rio de Janeiro and now adapted in 30+ countries. It is evaluated with the validated GEM Scale, though only 3 of its 14 documented impact studies are randomised controlled trials.

Context

Program H is a participatory group-education curriculum for men aged 15–24, developed from 1999–2001 in Rio de Janeiro favelas by Instituto Promundo with Brazilian partners ECOS and Instituto PAPAI. It launched in 2002 and remains part of Promundo/Equimundo's programming today.

Activities

The curriculum uses manuals, videos and a 'Hora H' social-marketing campaign to critically examine masculinity, violence, sexuality, fatherhood and domestic work.

Results

The programme's evaluation tool, the Gender-Equitable Men (GEM) Scale, was validated on a household sample of 742 men in Rio de Janeiro, where higher GEM scores were significantly associated with less self-reported partner violence and greater contraceptive use. Equimundo's evidence review documents 14 impact evaluations of Program H across 12 countries, of which only 3 are RCTs, 9 are quasi-experimental, and 2 are uncontrolled pre-post studies, with most follow-ups limited to 3–6 months.

Conclusions

Program H has been implemented or adapted in at least 32 countries according to Equimundo's current programme materials; a commonly cited '40+ countries' figure could not be independently confirmed for Program H specifically and may conflate with Promundo/Equimundo's wider MenCare portfolio, so it is not used here.
