Qatar Science & Technology Park (QSTP) opened in March 2009 as part of Qatar Foundation, backed by more than $800 million of investment, and was designated Qatar's first free-trade zone. It sits inside Education City in Doha, giving tenant companies direct access to branch campuses of international universities and their researchers. Early multinational tenants included EADS (Airbus), ExxonMobil, GE, Microsoft, Rolls-Royce, Shell, Total and local IT firm iHorizons; a second development phase, completed in 2014–2016, expanded the park's physical capacity. In 2014, QSTP became the first Arab-nation host of the International Association of Science Parks' World Conference.
As of an April 2026 report, QSTP hosted more than 400 companies, with active startups drawn from 39 countries, across four focus areas: energy, environment, health sciences, and information and communication technology. Recent programming reported in the same period included 12 online workshops reaching over 1,100 participants, five pitching sessions, and six mentorship engagements. Corporate-backed accelerators show measurable international and gender-diversity reach: the QSTP x TotalEnergies WaterTech Accelerator drew 226 applications from 79 countries, and the QSTP x Merck FemTech Accelerator drew 242 applications from 64 countries, 71% of them women-led. A dedicated women's community, 'The 300', had grown to over 300 members with 45 participants completing certificate programmes.
Compared with longer-running European counterparts, QSTP's publicly available evidence leans more on participation and reach metrics (tenant counts, applicant numbers, workshop attendance) than on audited economic outcomes such as jobs created, revenue generated, or company exits, so its impact evidence is real but less mature than that of peer institutions with two decades of tracked graduate-company performance.
