RIX Wiki is a multimedia tool developed by the RIX Centre, a Research and Development Centre that builds digital and multimedia technologies to improve the lives of people with learning disabilities, used in schools and adult centres in the UK.
To engage users with learning difficulties who cannot access busy standard screens, helping them map and organise their thinking and communicate their views and experiences, and giving them more control over how they are supported.
Users build their own private website around a mind map, with an easy survey tool likened to Survey Monkey for people with a learning disability. The software was designed for ease of use and tested extensively with a diverse network of co-researchers with complex needs.
In self-reported digital-inclusion learning impacts, almost half of users found big to very big changes in their self-confidence, ICT skills and communication skills; over 15% found big to very big changes in their Active Citizenship; and almost 25% found big to very big changes in their Self Advocacy.
The tool is presented as enabling people with learning disabilities to record their needs once, explain complexities in their own way, and take a more active role in their communities via a rich, engaging "About Me" platform.
