IRC's 'Safe Space to Learn' curriculum trained 50 displaced women in Yemen's Khanfar district over 20 weeks with loaned smartphones; participants reported a near four-fold rise in digital literacy, but power cuts and lack of personal devices limited lasting use.
IRC developed 'Safe Space to Learn' in 2020, a gender-sensitive, Creative Commons-licensed digital-literacy curriculum for displaced women, funded by Fujitsu and piloted with 50 adult women at an IRC Women and Girls' Safe Space in Khanfar district, Abyan governorate, Yemen, over twice-weekly two-hour sessions across 20 weeks using loaned smartphones.
Participants reported close to a four-fold increase in digital-literacy knowledge and greater confidence in tasks like CV writing and accessing job platforms.
IRC and Forced Migration Review both flag real limitations: power cuts and unreliable connectivity disrupted sessions, women without personal devices risked losing skills after the programme ended, the curriculum's literacy assumption excluded non-literate participants, and at 50 participants the pilot's findings are illustrative rather than conclusive.
