Description

SINTEF TTO is the technology-transfer and venture-capital arm of SINTEF, one of Europe's largest independent applied-research institutes, based in Trondheim and sharing roughly 200 laboratories with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
Operating since 1987, SINTEF TTO has invested NOK 500 million (about EUR 42 million) of SINTEF's own funds across 42 spin-off companies, while external investors — including the European Investment Fund — have contributed a further NOK 3 billion (about EUR 250 million). The office now manages three successive venture funds that have grown from NOK 209 million (2014) to NOK 500 million (2018) to NOK 517 million (2022), a documented eight-year scale-up in capital under management. Notable exits include SpinChip, a diagnostics spin-off acquired by a French group for EUR 138 million.
The most frequently cited aggregate revenue figure for SINTEF spin-offs (around NOK 4 billion a year) dates to 2015, and no public breakdown of gender or regional equity among founders was found, so this practice is best read as a strong capital-deployment and continuity track record rather than a fully transparent, current impact report.
