SLINTEC (the Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology) is a public–private joint venture founded in 2008 between Sri Lanka's National Science Foundation and a consortium of private corporates — including Brandix, Dialog, Hayleys, MAS Holdings, Lankem, Browns Group, LOLC and Camso Loadstar — set up on a 48-acre Nanotechnology & Science Park near Colombo to commercialise applied nanotech research in textiles, agriculture, energy and diagnostics.
As of 2021, SLINTEC had filed 11 patents (9 in the US, 2 in Sri Lanka) and sold three outright to India's Nagarjuna Corporation, while attracting 11 PhD-holding expatriate scientists back to Sri Lanka, according to the country's Export Development Board. Its majority LOLC-owned spin-off, Ceylon Graphene Technologies, produces roughly 300 tonnes per month of high-purity graphite-derived material for export to Japan, the US and India. Under new leadership from September 2022, SLINTEC commercialised eight patents and innovations within twelve months to December 2024 — four fully commercialised and four in advanced stage — compared with just seven commercialised across its entire prior sixteen-year history, as reported by Sri Lanka's Daily FT and Sunday Times.
That turnaround followed a documented setback: the same reporting discloses that SLINTEC lost more than 80 scientists over the four years to 2022 amid financial constraints, before the change in leadership reversed the decline. Revenue figures for SLINTEC itself, as distinct from its graphene spin-off, were not disclosed in the sources reviewed.
