Bedfordshire ran a published evaluation comparing its human-tutor Studiosity writing service with a new AI-augmented version. The 2024 AI trial cut average feedback turnaround from 5 hours to 2 minutes and recorded 11-21.5% grade gains in a single-institution comparison.
The University of Bedfordshire piloted Studiosity, a human-marked 24/7 writing-feedback service, in 2020/21 and adopted it institution-wide from 2021/22; from 19 February to 3 September 2024 it trialled Studiosity+, an AI-augmented version run alongside the classic human-marked service.
In 2022/23, 2,907 students logged 8,182 interactions with the classic service, with 96% written-feedback satisfaction, 74% live-help satisfaction, ~5-hour average turnaround, and 77% of use outside business hours. In the 2024 AI trial, 2,913 students logged 10,152 interactions, average turnaround fell to about 2 minutes, satisfaction stayed high (94%/70%), engagement rose ~50% and help-seeking moments rose ~124% versus the prior service; the published evaluation recorded grade improvements of 11.1% for first- and third-year students and 21.5% for second-year students relative to comparison groups.
The source cautions the grade-improvement figures come from a single institution's internal before/after comparison rather than a randomised trial, and that Studiosity co-publishes the same statistics on its own site, limiting full independence even though the study was peer-reviewed; it notes the usage and satisfaction figures are the most robust part of the evidence base.
