Suriname became the first country in the world to implement the updated UNESCO Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM 2.0), and the first English- and Dutch-speaking Caribbean nation to undertake this type of assessment. The process is jointly led by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Entrepreneurship and Technological Innovation (EZOTI) and the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture, with UNESCO support. The introductory stakeholder meeting, held on 27 August 2026, drew 106 participants from 67 institutions across 10 sectors, including government, business, education, technology and civil society.
RAM 2.0 examines governance, regulation, education and science, and technological infrastructure to determine whether Suriname has the institutions, laws, skills and safeguards needed to expand AI responsibly. The process, which includes surveys, interviews and sectoral consultations, will feed into the country's future national AI strategy, including how AI is used in the education sector.
As of this report, this is an early-stage diagnostic process with no completed strategy or measured classroom impact yet; its significance lies in embedding ethics and governance considerations for AI in education from the outset, in line with the UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of AI.
